Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved that age is no barrier to greatness. The 40-year-old forward scored twice as Portugal swept aside Armenia 5-0 in their opening World Cup 2026 qualifier on Saturday.
With his brace, Ronaldo extended his men’s international scoring record to 140 goals, underlining his enduring dominance on the global stage. His first strike settled Portugal after an early lead, while his second — a thunderous volley from distance — reminded fans of the trademark power and precision that has defined his career.
Ronaldo, who recently signed a new deal with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, remains focused on one final ambition: lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy. Having watched Lionel Messi achieve that dream in 2022, the Portuguese star is determined to make the 2026 edition in the United States, Canada, and Mexico his chance at glory.
At the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in Yerevan, Portugal were in complete control. Joao Felix opened the scoring inside 10 minutes and later added his second of the match, while Joao Cancelo also got on the scoresheet. Midfielder Vitinha described the team’s performance as “near perfect.”
But it was Ronaldo’s volley that stole the show, sending fans into celebration and reaffirming why he continues to chase greatness well into his 40s. If he reaches the 2026 World Cup, it will mark a record sixth appearance on football’s biggest stage.
