Severe Flooding Continues in Delhi-NCR Despite Yamuna Water Level RecedingBy HT News Desk

Despite a slight decrease in the Yamuna’s water level, parts of Delhi, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad are still grappling with severe waterlogging, causing major disruptions for commuters and residents on Friday morning. The river’s water level, though slightly stabilizing, remains above the danger mark and continues to contribute to flooding in the region.

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the Yamuna’s water level was 207.48 meters on Thursday morning, but by 10 pm, it receded to 207.4 meters. By 7 am on Friday, the water level further decreased to 207.33 meters, signaling a slight improvement. However, an official from the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department mentioned that the water levels are still expected to remain above the danger threshold, which will continue to cause waterlogging issues across Delhi.

In the wake of heavy rainfall in the capital, the situation remains precarious, with major flooding persisting in several low-lying areas. Civil Lines and nearby areas saw severe waterlogging, with streets around Monastery Market completely submerged. Some residents have had to wade through the water, and efforts are underway to evacuate them from flood-affected zones. Visuals from the ORB/Loha Pul area show the Yamuna flowing above the danger mark, and residents from surrounding areas are being relocated to safer locations and shelters.

The situation has worsened in parts of NCR as well, with Gurugram and Ghaziabad also experiencing severe flooding. In Ghaziabad, 55 families were evacuated from a village near Badarpur after water released from the Hathnikund barrage caused the Yamuna to swell. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) helped rescue the families, and relief efforts, including food provisions, are in place. However, many villagers remain hesitant to leave their homes.

In addition to these ongoing challenges, the India Meteorological Department forecasts a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain for Delhi on Friday. The temperature is expected to range between 23°C and 33°C.

Meanwhile, floodwaters have affected relief camps in some areas, and the administration continues to monitor the situation closely, particularly around the embankments of the Yamuna, to prevent further damage to surrounding villages.
