The UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Tournament is set to kick off in Delhi on September 7, with top Indian paddlers Diya Chitale, G Sathiyan, and Harmeet Desai leading a star-studded lineup. The week-long event will be held at the Thyagraj Stadium and will feature a record 2,958 entries across multiple categories.

Big Names in Action

• Diya Chitale, the reigning national champion, enters as the favourite in the women’s field. She will face competition from seasoned players like Mouma Das, Madhurika Patkar, Reeth Rishya, and Divya Deshpande.
• The men’s draw includes G Sathiyan, Harmeet Desai, Anthony Amalraj, and Soumyajit Ghosh, who is returning to the national circuit after a long break following the 2012 London Olympics.

Notably, Manika Batra will not feature in the tournament as she is currently focused on international commitments.

Organisers’ Perspective

This marks the first time since 2008 that the Delhi State Table Tennis Association (DSTTA) is hosting a national ranking event, though the capital last staged one in 2012 with support from Haryana.

DSTTA president Gurpreet Singh highlighted the strong response:

“I can’t recall the last time a national ranking event had so many entries. We are fully prepared to host.”

National coach and Dronacharya awardee Sandeep Gupta added that the tournament offers a valuable platform:

“With so many national champions in action, young players in Delhi will get a chance to learn by competing against the best.”
