Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the on-field clash between Nitish Rana and Digvesh Rathi, calling it an example of passion in cricket while praising Rana’s maturity in handling post-match questions.
Ashwin’s Take on the Incident
Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin said that Rathi showing aggression as a bowler shouldn’t be seen negatively, but what stood out was Rana’s composed reaction afterward.
“It was Rana’s day. He hit 15 sixes. After the game, he was asked what happened. He could have easily thrown dirt on Digvesh Rathi, but he didn’t. He said both were playing to help their teams win. That respect for the game—and for the opponent—was commendable,” Ashwin remarked.
Rana’s Side of the Story
Rana also addressed the matter in an interview with PTI, saying that while he doesn’t shy away from confrontation, he never initiates it.
“If someone provokes me, I won’t take it quietly. That’s how I’ve played my cricket throughout. I can also respond with my bat—and I did. But above all, we must respect the game,” he said.
Match and Consequences
The clash occurred during a high-stakes league encounter. Rana smashed 134 runs off just 55 balls, guiding West Delhi Lions to chase down 202 against Rathi’s South Delhi Superstarz. The Lions went on to beat East Delhi Riders in Qualifier 2 and later defeated Central Delhi Kings in the final to clinch the title.
Both players, however, faced penalties:
- Digvesh Rathi: Fined 80% of his match fee for a Level 2 breach.
- Nitish Rana: Fined 50% of his match fee for a Level 1 breach.
Despite the fines, Rana’s leadership and performance earned him widespread praise, with Ashwin noting that his “respect for Rana has grown.”
