No Respite from Monsoon Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert for Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal and Punjab

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a red alert for several states in North and East India, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall through September 3. The warning has prompted widespread school closures across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the IMD, intense rain is expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, north Punjab, north Haryana, east Rajasthan, southwest Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. Extremely heavy rainfall has also been forecast for Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch between September 4 and 7.

Jammu & Kashmir

Heavy downpours lashed multiple districts overnight. Between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning, rainfall totals included:

  • Jammu: 81 mm
  • Batote: 157.3 mm
  • Reasi: 203 mm
  • Katra: 193 mm
  • Doda: 114 mm
  • Banihal: 95 mm

Authorities have ordered closure of all schools across the Kashmir division on September 3 due to safety concerns.

Delhi-NCR

The regional weather office issued a yellow alert, warning of light to moderate rain across parts of Delhi and its adjoining areas, including Kanjhawala, Mundka, and Bahadurgarh. The Yamuna river crossed the danger mark after water was released from the Hathnikund Barrage, leading to flooding in low-lying areas and closure of the Loha Pul for traffic.

Punjab

Flooding from continuous rainfall has severely affected districts such as Kapurthala, where residents used boats to evacuate homes near the Beas river. All schools, both government and private, were ordered shut on September 3.

Uttar Pradesh

Heavy showers led to school closures in several districts, including Bulandshahr, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Greater Noida.

Himachal Pradesh

The Shimla District Disaster Management Authority directed all educational institutions in the district to remain closed on September 3 due to persistent rain and safety risks.

The IMD has also warned of heavy rain over Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states until September 7.
