Johnson is playing real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr in the A24 biopic The Smashing Machine. Once weighing around 300 pounds, Johnson slimmed down to roughly 240 pounds to authentically portray the UFC legend. His new look even earned him the playful nickname “The Pebble” on social media.
“This was something I was really hungry to do,” Johnson said at a press event, explaining that the transformation was part of his commitment to challenge himself creatively and move beyond the blockbuster action-hero image that has defined much of his career.

While speculation online linked his weight loss to drugs like Ozempic, Johnson dismissed those claims. He said the shift was influenced by digestive health issues he began treating in 2024, alongside his disciplined workout regimen. The hard work paid off. The Smashing Machine, co-starring Emily Blunt and directed by Benny Safdie, earned a 15-minute standing ovation at its premiere, moving both Johnson and Kerr to tears.
