Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha has stirred controversy within her party after openly accusing her cousins, former irrigation minister T. Harish Rao and former MP J. Santosh Rao, of irregularities in the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project.
Speaking at a press conference in Hyderabad, soon after returning from a 10-day trip to the US, Kavitha alleged that both leaders misused their roles in the project and amassed wealth while making her father, BRS chief and former chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), a scapegoat.
“When a leader like KCR, who fought for Telangana, is forced to face a CBI inquiry, does it even matter if the BRS survives or not?” she said, questioning the state government’s decision to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Kavitha directly held Harish Rao and Santosh responsible for decisions in the project, calling them the “anacondas of corruption.” She claimed that Harish Rao’s removal as irrigation minister during the BRS’s second term was linked to his role in the alleged irregularities.
The MLC also accused detractors of running online campaigns to tarnish her image and criticized the party’s silence over the issue. “Losing an election is one thing, but losing one’s honour is far worse. Why has the BRS not called for a Telangana bandh after the CBI probe was announced?” she asked.
Reiterating her demand for a direct inquiry into those she named, Kavitha said the truth would emerge if the investigation focused on the right individuals, including contractor Megha Krishna Reddy.
Kavitha elected HMS honorary president
In a separate development, Kavitha was unanimously elected as the honorary president of the Hindustan Mazdoor Sangh (HMS) at its general body meeting in Srirampur, Mancherial district. She is the second BRS leader to hold this position, following the late N. Narasimha Reddy.
Her election comes shortly after she was removed from the Telangana Boggu Ghani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS) and replaced by former minister Koppula Eashwar.
