New Delhi – Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has defended her recent remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying her words were idiomatic and not meant to be taken literally. Facing an FIR in Chhattisgarh over alleged derogatory comments, she hit back at the BJP, saying, “Idiots don’t understand idioms.”
Clarification on ‘Head-Cutting’ Remark
The controversy erupted after Moitra, speaking in Bengali, was accused of suggesting that Shah’s head should be cut off if he failed to stop infiltration from Bangladesh. Moitra later clarified that she used common Bengali idioms which metaphorically refer to accountability and responsibility, not physical harm.
“In Bengali, we say lajjay matha kata chhe—it means being so ashamed you could cut your own head off. It is an expression of accountability. When we say ‘heads will roll’ in English, it doesn’t mean literal beheadings either,” she explained.
FIR Filed in Chhattisgarh
Raipur police registered a case against Moitra under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to promoting enmity and prejudicing national integration. Moitra alleged the FIR was based on a faulty translation of her Bengali remarks.
She said, “I said matha ke tebi le, which is very different from gala kaat diya. Google Translate cannot be the basis for false FIRs.”
Attack on BJP and Police
Moitra accused the BJP of trying to turn her into a political victim. “Every time you do this to me, it only makes me stronger. You expelled me from Parliament, and I came back. Now you’re making me into Joan of Arc,” she said.
She also criticised the Chhattisgarh police, recalling a previous case involving migrant workers from her constituency, where she alleged wrongful arrests and illegal detention.
Political Fallout
The TMC leader maintained that her remarks were misinterpreted and that the BJP was deliberately twisting her words for political gain. She added, “These are idioms, metaphors for accountability. Idiots don’t understand idioms.”
Moitra said she would challenge the FIR in court, adding defiantly: “Take your FIRs and keep them where the sun doesn’t shine. I’ll see you in court, and more heads will roll—metaphorically, of course.”
