Rahul Dravid Steps Down as Rajasthan Royals Head Coach Ahead of IPL 2026

Rajasthan Royals have confirmed that Rahul Dravid will not continue as head coach, ending his second stint with the franchise just a year after his return.

Royals Confirm Dravid’s Exit

In an official statement, the team said Dravid had been offered a broader role following a structural review of the franchise but chose to step away entirely.

“Rahul has been central to the Royals’ journey over many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, built strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise,” the statement read.

Second Stint Ends Abruptly

Dravid, 52, was appointed in September 2024 on a multi-year deal, soon after guiding India to a T20 World Cup win. His return raised hopes of reviving the Royals, who last won the IPL title in 2008. However, the 2025 season proved disappointing — the team managed only four wins in 14 matches, finishing ninth on the table.

Adding to the challenge, Dravid himself was restricted through much of the season after a foot injury in a club game in Bengaluru left him confined to a wheelchair.

Royals’ Next Move

The franchise is now expected to look for a new head coach or consider reinstating Kumar Sangakkara, who was elevated to Director of Cricket when Dravid joined.

Dravid had previously played a pivotal role with Rajasthan Royals between 2011 and 2015, serving as both player and mentor. His departure marks the end of another chapter in his long association with the Jaipur-based franchise.
