September 2025 Skywatching Events: From Blood Moon to Solar Eclipse, Here’s What to Watch in the Sky

September 2025 promises a month full of rare and awe-inspiring celestial events, making it a fantastic time for skywatchers. From eclipses that paint the sky red to Saturn shining at its brightest, there’s no shortage of incredible sights to look forward to this month.

Total Lunar Eclipse on 7th September

One of the major highlights of September is the total lunar eclipse, which will be visible across several continents, including Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Taking place on 7th September, this will be the second total lunar eclipse of 2025, with the next one not expected until March 2026. This celestial event will coincide with the Corn Moon, the full moon in September, a traditional name that dates back to farming practices in the Northern Hemisphere. Farmers used this time to harvest crops, particularly corn.

The total lunar eclipse, also known as the “Blood Moon,” will provide a stunning visual as the Earth’s shadow casts a reddish hue over the Moon.

Partial Solar Eclipse on 21st September

On 21st September, a partial solar eclipse will be visible across the South Pacific and parts of Antarctica. Skywatchers in New Zealand can catch a glimpse of the eclipse at sunrise on 22nd September, local time. It’s important to note that proper eye protection is necessary when observing a solar eclipse to avoid damage to the eyes.

A Darker Sky for Stargazing

The same day as the partial solar eclipse, the Moon will reach its new phase, creating darker skies that are perfect for stargazing. This provides an excellent opportunity to view stars and planets without the interference of moonlight, giving skywatchers the chance to spot celestial objects clearly.
