Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has opened up about his absence from India’s recent squads, sending a straightforward message to BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his panel.
Shami, who last played international cricket during the Champions Trophy in March, missed both the England series and the five-match tour of Australia. He also featured in the IPL 2025 but admitted that his own fitness concerns led to him stepping back from national duty.
Shami on Fitness and Selection
“Before the Australia tour, I had discomfort. I believe if you are not at the level the team expects, you should step back,” Shami told News24.
Asked if he was consulted for the Asia Cup squad, the pacer said he holds no grudges against the selectors. “I have never blamed anyone or complained that selectors should talk to me. If I fit into your plans, pick me. If I don’t, then don’t. I have no objections. Do what’s best for the nation. If you give me an opportunity, I will try to do my best.”
Eyeing a Comeback
Shami confirmed that he is working on his fitness and hinted at a possible return through domestic cricket. “If I can play the Duleep Trophy, I can certainly play T20Is,” he said.
The 34-year-old’s comments underline his readiness to represent India again, provided the selectors believe he fits into their future plans.
