Google Translate Revamp Brings Live Conversations and Language Learning Tools

New Delhi: Google is transforming its Translate app from a simple translation service into a direct competitor to language-learning platforms like Duolingo. The latest upgrade introduces real-time conversation tools and interactive practice sessions, powered by Google’s Gemini AI models.

Live Conversation Mode

The biggest new feature is Live Translate, which allows users to hold natural, back-and-forth conversations with both on-screen and audio translations. Supporting more than 70 languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Arabic, French, and Spanish, the mode intelligently detects pauses, accents, and intonations.

Google says Gemini AI has been trained to filter out background noise, making the feature practical in busy spaces such as markets, airports, or cafes. The interface uses a thread-like design, making conversations easy to follow.

Language Practice Tools

Alongside real-time translation, Google Translate is also debuting a language practice feature to help users build conversational skills. Learners can choose their fluency level—Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced—and set goals like travel or daily interactions.

The app then generates tailored exercises, such as listening to sample conversations, identifying key words, or practising speaking with on-screen hints. For example, a prompt like “Ask about meal times” might involve listening to a simulated dialogue or practising responses aloud.

Progress is tracked daily to encourage consistency. Currently, the practice tool is in beta testing for:

  • English speakers learning Spanish and French
  • Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers learning English

It remains free during the testing phase.

Rollout

The updated Translate app is rolling out on Android and iOS across the US, Mexico, and India. Google plans to expand the practice tool to more languages and regions in the coming months.
