Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that Ahmedabad has rapidly transformed into a hub for tourism and large-scale global events, highlighting its growing role in what he described as a “concert economy.”
Speaking at a function in Ahmedabad, where he laid the foundation stone and dedicated projects worth ₹5,400 crore, the Prime Minister recalled the Coldplay concert hosted at the city’s Narendra Modi Stadium earlier this year, which drew global attention.
Ahmedabad as a Tourism and Event Hub
PM Modi noted that Ahmedabad’s development has created new opportunities for modern and innovative tourism. He pointed out that the city is now home to the world’s largest cricket stadium, capable of hosting both major sporting fixtures and international music concerts.
He added that Ahmedabad’s recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage City has strengthened its global profile. “From historic gates and the Sabarmati Ashram to large-scale events, Ahmedabad today shines on the world map,” he said.
From Unrest to One of the Safest Cities
Reflecting on the city’s past, the Prime Minister said earlier generations witnessed frequent curfews and disruptions that hampered trade and daily life. He credited the people of Gujarat for transforming Ahmedabad into one of India’s safest and most vibrant cities.
Coldplay Concert Sets Record
Ahmedabad hosted the British band Coldplay on January 25–26, 2025, as part of the group’s Music of the Spheres tour. The two-day event drew over 2.5 lakh fans, with a record 1.3 lakh tickets sold. The concert attracted visitors from across India and abroad, cementing the city’s position as a global stage for cultural and entertainment events.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw praised the event, calling it a “global benchmark” for India’s ability to host world-class concerts and gatherings.
PM Modi underlined that Gujarat’s growth and its role in Aatmanirbhar Bharat were the results of two decades of sustained effort and vision.
