London: Manchester United’s struggles under manager Ruben Amorim deepened on Sunday as a 1-1 draw at Fulham extended their winless start to the new Premier League season. The Portuguese coach’s record now stands at just 28 points from 29 league games, drawing an uncomfortable comparison with former manager Neil Warnock, who suffered two relegations in the top flight.
Numbers That Tell a Story
Amorim’s win rate at United is 24.1%, with only 7 victories from 29 matches. That statistic is identical to Warnock’s Premier League record of 27 wins in 112 games — hardly the company United fans want their club to keep.
Another Missed Opportunity at Craven Cottage
United looked set to break their drought after Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz diverted a Leny Yoro header into his own net just past the hour mark. But instead of pressing home their advantage, United retreated, inviting pressure.
Fulham punished them late as Emile Smith Rowe was left unmarked to slot home Alex Iwobi’s cross, leaving Amorim once again frustrated.
Earlier, United captain Bruno Fernandes missed a golden chance to put his side ahead, blasting a penalty over the bar after VAR spotted Calvin Bassey holding Mason Mount in the box.
Expensive Attack, Little Spark
Despite spending over £200 million this summer on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, United’s frontline continues to misfire. Cunha and Mbeumo offered little threat at Fulham, while Sesko was left on the bench once again.
Amorim admitted his side failed to manage the game properly after taking the lead:
“After our goal we only thought about the result. We were okay until then, but not smart in that moment.”
Pressure Mounting
With United coming off a disappointing 15th-place finish last season, patience is wearing thin among fans and the board. Amorim was hired to restore identity and competitiveness, but instead finds himself battling grim statistics and growing criticism. Unless results improve quickly, his tenure risks being remembered for all the wrong reasons.
