OpenAI’s announcement of opening its first office in India in New Delhi has stirred significant chatter on social media, with many questioning why the AI giant didn’t choose Bengaluru, a city widely recognized as the tech hub of India. The company, known for its popular AI tool, ChatGPT, revealed plans to open the office later this year, with CEO Sam Altman tweeting that he looks forward to visiting next month. This move has led to mixed reactions from the tech community.
Social Media Reactions: Bengaluru vs. Delhi
Since the announcement, many have taken to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express surprise over Delhi being chosen as the location. Several users pointed out that Bengaluru, often referred to as “India’s Silicon Valley,” has a much larger tech talent pool, making it a more logical choice. One person posted, “Biggest developer community… I am surprised you decided to open in Delhi instead of Bangalore,” while another remarked, “Extremely sus, all tech talent is in Bengaluru.” Some even speculated that the decision was politically motivated, with one user commenting, “The only reason to have an office in Delhi is to lobby the government; there’s no tech talent in Delhi. Sus.”
However, not all reactions were negative. A few individuals expressed excitement, with one person writing, “This is amazing news! But how did Delhi beat Bangalore?”
OpenAI’s Commitment to India
Despite the debate, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman remains optimistic about the move. He highlighted the impressive growth in AI adoption in India, with ChatGPT usage reportedly increasing fourfold in the past year. Altman expressed enthusiasm about investing further in the country, stating, “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.”
The company has already begun hiring for the new office, and in line with its expansion efforts, OpenAI recently launched ChatGPT Go in India—a low-cost subscription tier priced at ₹399 per month, offering users additional features.
Looking Ahead
While the decision to set up the office in Delhi may have sparked debate, OpenAI’s focus on increasing its presence and building a local team in India shows its commitment to the country’s growing tech landscape. As the AI space continues to evolve, this move could pave the way for further investments and innovations in the Indian market.
