Actor Vijay has hinted that he could contest from Madurai East in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2026, a statement that has stirred both excitement and skepticism among locals.
On Thursday, Vijay subtly suggested that he might enter the political arena by running from Madurai East, a constituency historically associated with political power shifts in the state. The announcement has ignited discussions, especially among those disillusioned with the two dominant Dravidian parties, AIADMK and DMK.
In rural Madurai, where women work in the fields, politics has become a common topic of conversation. Many of these women, like Sachi, a daily wage worker, express their disillusionment with the current political climate. “We’ve voted for both Two Leaves and Rising Sun. But this time, it’s for Vijay. We believe he’d do good for us,” she says, referring to the election symbols of AIADMK and DMK.
Her colleague, Mallika, speaks with a sense of both hope and frustration, “Women are unable to go out, we can’t go anywhere alone. After MGR, it’s Vijay who looks at people as his own.” Vijay’s association with the legacy of AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran resonates deeply with many in the region, further fueling their interest in his potential candidacy.
Madurai East: A Constituency with a History of Power Shifts
Madurai East has a rich political history, having been represented by a variety of parties over the years. Dominated by communists and AIADMK until the 1990s, the DMK has won two of the last three elections after delimitation. Locals believe that the party that secures Madurai East has a good chance of claiming power in Chennai.
However, some political observers, like Stephen, a local school teacher, point out that Vijay may need to form an alliance to secure a win. “Vijay has to go for an alliance,” he suggests, “otherwise, it’s difficult.”
The Vijay Wave in Madurai
Vijay’s mass appeal was evident during his recent visit to Madurai, where he was greeted by a crowd of around four lakh fans, many of whom could become his political supporters. “Madurai gives Vijay such a collection and a mass entry,” says Ashwini Veronica, a fluency coach. “Why not capitalize on it? He’s touching a sweet spot.”
For Vijay, Madurai represents not just electoral numbers but a symbolic connection to MGR’s legacy and the possibility of turning his fan base into a political force.
Urban Reactions Divided
In the urban parts of Madurai, reactions to Vijay’s possible candidacy are more cautious. Babu, an entrepreneur, acknowledges that Vijay could attract young, first-time voters but believes that many older voters will still prefer one of the traditional Dravidian parties. “Vijay will definitely attract young, first-time voters,” Babu says. “But others would still vote for one of the Dravidian parties.”
An Uncertain Political Future
While it remains uncertain if Vijay will officially announce his candidacy for Madurai East, the constituency’s history of political importance and its symbolic connection to MGR’s legacy appear to have captured Vijay’s imagination.
