The Shreyas Iyer Selection Conundrum

Shreyas Iyer’s omission from India’s squad for the 2025 Asia Cup has sparked a significant uproar, particularly on social media. The platform is buzzing with memes, cryptic posts, and direct criticism of the decision. Even Iyer’s father, Santosh Iyer, has voiced his discontent, questioning the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar. Former cricketers like R. Ashwin and Irfan Pathan have also raised their concerns, asking how both Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal could have been overlooked for the tournament.

The Controversy and Justification

The criticism largely stems from the rules set by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for the Asia Cup, which allows each team to have a 17-member squad. The ACC guidelines read: “Each squad will comprise seventeen (17) players, and eight (8) team officials. The touring squad from any participating country will therefore comprise twenty-five (25) individuals.”

Agarkar defended the decision, saying, “With regards to Shreyas, we’ll have to tell you who he can replace. Again, no fault of his, nor is it ours. It’s just that we can only pick 15, and at the moment, he will have to wait for his chance.” He also explained the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal, saying, “With Abhishek Sharma’s recent performances and his ability to bowl a little bit, it gives us some flexibility if required by the captain. One of these guys will always miss out, and it’s unfortunate that Yashasvi might have to wait for his chance.”

Given the 17-player clause, Agarkar’s explanation of “no fault of his, nor is it ours” raises the question—does this justification truly hold water? While the selectors’ reasoning seems valid, the backlash could have been mitigated, especially with the controversy surrounding Iyer’s omission.

Perspectives from MSK Prasad

Former chief selector MSK Prasad weighed in, highlighting that the issue wasn’t just about Iyer, but also about Mohammed Siraj’s exclusion. “Unless he has been rested for workload management, he should have been in the squad. He was the Player of the Match in the last Asia Cup (50-over) final,” Prasad pointed out. He added that if the selectors had the option to field 17 players, he would have included at least two of Iyer, Siraj, or Jaiswal.

Prasad acknowledged the selectors’ position on not picking a full 17-player squad, stating, “Having too many players on the bench puts pressure on the XI.”

A BCCI source mentioned that since all bases were covered, the selectors felt there was no need to opt for a 17-player squad. While Pakistan and Hong Kong have confirmed their 17-member squads, not all participating nations have announced their teams yet.

Pragyan Ojha Joins Asia Cup Panel

In another update, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha has been appointed to the technical committee for the Asia Cup. As a member of the panel, he will help adjudicate cricketing disputes, including decisions on mid-tournament replacements. The technical committee is responsible for running the tournament, ensuring the adherence to rules, and appointing match officials. Ojha, a respected former international cricketer with 24 Tests, 18 ODIs, and six T20Is, has also served on the IPL Governing Council and represented the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA).
