“Silence Only Emboldens The Bully”: Chinese Ambassador to India on US Tariffs

Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, has strongly criticized the United States for its imposition of tariffs on India, accusing the country of acting like a “bully” and using tariffs as “bargaining chips.”

In his speech at an event organized by the Chintan Research Foundation (CRF), Xu expressed China’s firm opposition to the US tariffs, which can go up to 50%, and its threats of further increases. He emphasized that while the US has historically benefited from free trade, it is now using these tariffs to extract unreasonable demands from countries.

“Silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India to uphold the multilateral trading system,” Xu stated.

The ambassador also highlighted the significant changes happening in the international order, stressing the importance of cooperation between China and India. As two major developing countries, he believes the nations should unite and work together to drive global economic growth. “China and India’s friendship benefits Asia. We are the double engines of economic growth in Asia,” he said.

Xu further emphasized that the partnership between India and China is crucial for maintaining global stability. “India and China have the responsibility to take the lead in promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world,” he added.

On trade, Xu expressed optimism about expanding economic ties between the two nations. He stated that China welcomes more Indian goods in its market and highlighted India’s strengths in IT, software, and biomedicine. Similarly, he pointed out China’s rapid growth in electronic manufacturing, infrastructure, and new energy sectors.

“If connected, the two major markets will produce an effect of one plus one bigger than two,” Xu remarked.

His comments come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Delhi. Modi is also expected to visit China later this year for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) leaders’ meeting.
