The Indian women’s cricket selection committee, headed by Neetu David, is meeting in Mumbai today to finalise the squad for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, starting September 30. The same team is also expected to feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia at home.
Key Talking Points
- Shafali Verma’s selection remains the biggest question. Since her return against England, she has had mixed results — a promising 75 but also a string of low scores. The selectors must decide whether to disrupt the stable opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal to accommodate her aggressive style.
- Renuka Thakur’s fitness will also be closely monitored. The pace spearhead has been sidelined since March with an ankle issue, and her availability could be vital in home conditions.
- Batting core looks settled, with Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur forming the middle order. Richa Ghosh is expected to take the gloves, with Yastika Bhatia as backup.
- Spin attack will be crucial in subcontinental conditions. Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, and Radha Yadav are expected to lead the department, with youngster N Shree Charani pushing for inclusion.
- All-rounder Amanjot Kaur remains under observation after a back injury, and the selectors may manage her workload carefully.
India’s Build-Up
India heads into the World Cup with strong momentum, having won the ODI tri-series against Sri Lanka and South Africa earlier this year, followed by white-ball series victories in England. The team will play Australia in three ODIs next month as part of their final preparations.
World Cup Schedule
India will begin their campaign against Sri Lanka on September 30 in Bengaluru. The tournament will be hosted across India, with the exception of Pakistan’s matches, which will be played in Colombo.
The selectors are also expected to name an India A squad for the warm-up match against South Africa at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
