Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, known for his iconic role as a stern professor in 3 Idiots, passed away at the age of 91 in Thane on Monday. He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for health complications. The cause of death has not been disclosed. His funeral is scheduled to be held today in Thane.
From Army Officer to Acclaimed Actor
Before entering the film industry, Potdar served in the Indian Armed Forces and later worked with the Indian Oil Corporation. It was only in the 1980s that he pursued acting full-time, marking the beginning of a career that would span over four decades.
He went on to appear in more than 125 films, across both Hindi and Marathi cinema. His diverse filmography includes titles like Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Parinda, Tezaab, Rangeela, Vaastav, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2 and Ventilator.
Rise to Popular Fame
While respected for his wide-ranging roles, Potdar became a household name for his performance in Rajkumar Hirani’s blockbuster 3 Idiots (2009), where his line “kya baat hai” gained cult status and continues to be used in pop culture and memes.

Beyond films, Potdar left his mark on television and theatre, with appearances in shows such as Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, Mrs Tendulkar and Bharat Ki Khoj. His versatility made him a respected figure across mediums.
