Mumbai Rains: Red Alert Issued, Schools and Colleges Shut in Several Districts

Mumbai, August 19, 2025 – Heavy overnight rainfall has brought Mumbai to a standstill, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the city and adjoining districts. Several areas, including Thane and Palghar, have declared a holiday for schools and colleges today due to safety concerns.

According to IMD data, the eastern suburb of Vikhroli recorded the highest rainfall at 255.5 mm in the past 24 hours, while Santacruz reported 238.2 mm and Byculla 241 mm. South Mumbai’s Colaba received comparatively lower rainfall at 110.4 mm.

Severe Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions

Low-lying areas across the city remain inundated, with water levels reaching up to two feet in parts of Byculla, Juhu, Bandra, Wadala, Nagpada, and Matunga. The Andheri and Malad subways have been shut after heavy water accumulation, forcing traffic diversions. Similar flooding was reported in Paydhuni, Kalbadevi, and Hindmata Junction, causing long delays during the morning rush hour.

A truck breakdown at Wadala T. Junction further slowed southbound traffic, adding to the congestion.

Airlines Issue Advisory

IndiGo Airlines has issued a travel advisory for passengers flying out of Mumbai, warning of delays due to waterlogging on roads leading to the airport. Travelers have been urged to check flight schedules on the airline’s app or website before leaving for the airport.

Government Measures

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday urged citizens to stay cautious as more rain and high tides are expected. The state government has declared a precautionary closure of schools and colleges in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts.
