India’s preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026 begins with the Asia Cup, which kicks off in the UAE on September 9. With Ajit Agarkar-led selectors set to announce the squad on Tuesday, a few key decisions could shape the team’s roadmap for defending their world title.
Opening Conundrum: Gill, Jaiswal or Samson?
India’s most recent T20I opening pair has been Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Abhishek’s explosive form against England earlier this year – including a 54-ball 135 – has all but cemented his place. Samson, however, has struggled with form and injuries, raising doubts about his spot.
With Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal in contention, Samson may face the axe. Jaiswal was the back-up opener at last year’s World Cup, while Gill, who now captains the Test side, has been in and around the T20I set-up.
Middle-Order: Tilak vs Iyer
The No. 3 position is expected to be tightly contested between Tilak Varma and Shreyas Iyer. While Tilak impressed in South Africa, his IPL form dipped. Shreyas, on the other hand, enjoyed a stunning season with Punjab Kings, scoring over 600 runs at a strike rate of 175. His proven ability against spin adds weight to his case.
With Suryakumar Yadav a certainty at No. 4, the selectors must decide whether to stick with Tilak or back Shreyas’ current form. If Samson misses out, Jitesh Sharma could also come in as a middle-order finisher and second wicketkeeper.
Spin Puzzle: Kuldeep or Varun – or Both?
Varun Chakravarthy forced his way into contention with 14 wickets in five games against England, while Kuldeep Yadav is returning from injury. Both featured in India’s Champions Trophy-winning squad earlier this year, but playing them together might force India to compromise on batting depth or seam options.
Pace Attack: Bumrah, Arshdeep and One More
If fit, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh walk into the XI. The third seamer’s slot could go to Prasidh Krishna, IPL 2025’s Purple Cap winner, or Harshit Rana, who impressed against England on debut.
Allround Options: Dube, Parag, Rinku
In the lower middle order, Shivam Dube is the frontrunner thanks to his consistent T20I presence and strong IPL season for CSK. Riyan Parag returns from injury, while Rinku Singh may struggle to fit in unless selectors opt for a pure finisher. Washington Sundar remains the only frontline offspin option.
Two wildcard picks are Vipraj Nigam, the 20-year-old legspinning allrounder who impressed in his debut IPL season, and Ramandeep Singh, though his recent form has been modest.
What to Expect
While many spots are locked, the Asia Cup squad announcement will reveal whether the selectors back in-form players like Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill, or continue with incumbents such as Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson. With the World Cup only six months away, the decisions made this week will provide the clearest picture yet of India’s T20 core.
