Microsoft Plans to Mandate 3 Days of Office Work From 2025

Microsoft is preparing to tighten its hybrid work policy, potentially requiring employees to spend at least three days a week in the office starting next year, according to a report by Business Insider.

At its Redmond, Washington headquarters, staff are expected to begin following the new rules from early 2025. While a formal announcement was initially slated for September, the company is still finalizing details, and rollout timelines may differ by location.

From Flexible to Structured

Since late 2020, Microsoft has followed a flexible work model that allowed employees to divide their time between home and office without needing special approval. In practice, many workers operated almost fully remotely.

Now, the company appears ready to enforce a stricter balance. A Microsoft spokesperson, Frank Shaw, confirmed that updates to the flexible work guidelines are under consideration but stressed that no final decision has been made yet.

Tech Industry Trend

If implemented, Microsoft’s policy would bring it in line with other tech giants:

  • Amazon requires employees to be in-office five days a week.
  • AT&T has also enforced a strict return-to-office stance under CEO John Stankey.
  • Meta and Google currently follow a three-day in-office model, similar to Microsoft’s planned approach.

Some Microsoft divisions are already ahead of the change. Employees in its Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) group reportedly work from the office more than three days a week.

End of Ultra-Flexible Remote Era?

The shift signals a broader industry move away from ultra-flexible remote work, as major tech firms emphasize collaboration, culture, and productivity within physical offices. For Microsoft’s workforce, the new rules will mean adjusting after years of relative freedom in choosing how and where to work.
