The geopolitical stage shifted dramatically last week when Russian President Vladimir Putin met US President Donald Trump at a surprise summit in Anchorage, Alaska. The meeting, described as Putin’s return to international diplomacy after years of isolation, has already altered the tone of upcoming negotiations over the war in Ukraine.
During the Alaska summit, Trump openly applauded Putin on his arrival, a moment seen by many as symbolic of Washington’s new approach. Instead of emphasizing a ceasefire — long considered a prerequisite for peace by Ukraine and its European allies — Trump spoke of pursuing a “full peace deal,” a stance that aligns more closely with Moscow’s objectives. For the Kremlin, this represents a major diplomatic win.
Zelensky’s Urgent Washington Mission
Against this backdrop, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is traveling to Washington, accompanied by European leaders, for direct talks with Trump. Central to the discussions will be Russia’s demand that Ukraine withdraw from parts of the Donbas region — territory annexed by Moscow but not fully under its control.
For Kyiv, this is a red line. Accepting territorial concessions would undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and signal a major strategic loss. Yet rejecting Trump’s terms risks portraying Ukraine and Europe as obstacles to peace in the eyes of the White House, complicating diplomatic efforts further.
Kremlin’s Quiet Advantage
From Moscow’s perspective, even the fact that territorial concessions are on the negotiating table is a victory. It diverts attention from regions already captured by Russian forces and shifts the debate toward how much more Ukraine might be forced to give up.
The Alaska summit also revealed Trump’s posture toward Putin. Observers noted the usually assertive US president appeared unusually deferential, even allowing Putin to speak first at the press briefing — a rare protocol reversal on American soil. Putin, in turn, invited Trump to visit Moscow, framing the relationship as one of equals, if not tipping the balance in Russia’s favor.
What’s at Stake
As Zelensky prepares for his Washington meetings, the stakes are enormous. A peace deal shaped around Kremlin demands could fundamentally alter Ukraine’s borders and shift the balance of power in Europe. But standing firm risks straining relations with a US president eager to present himself as a peacemaker.
In the days ahead, the outcome of these talks will determine not just Ukraine’s future but also the credibility of Western unity in resisting Russian aggression.
