Chennai, August 17, 2025 — Chennai Super Kings have clarified details around the signing of South African batter Dewald Brevis during IPL 2025, stating that the move was made “in complete compliance” with tournament regulations.
The statement came after India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, suggested that Brevis might have been signed for more than his eligible price of ₹2.2 crore.
Ashwin had claimed that multiple teams were in discussions with Brevis and that the youngster may have demanded a higher fee to join mid-season. “He might have told CSK, ‘I’ll need extra money’, and the team was willing to pay him. That’s why he came in,” Ashwin said.
IPL Regulations on Replacements
According to IPL rules, a replacement player cannot be signed for more than the amount of the player he replaces. Additionally, the contract fee is adjusted to account for matches already played before the replacement is registered.
Brevis, who went unsold at the IPL 2025 auction, was brought in as a mid-season replacement for pacer Gurjapneet Singh, who had been signed for ₹2.2 crore but was later ruled out with injury.
CSK’s Official Statement
In its clarification, CSK confirmed that Brevis was signed in April 2025 for the same ₹2.2 crore fee that Gurjapneet had fetched at the auction. The franchise said the signing was in line with Clause 6.6 of the IPL Player Regulations 2025–27 governing replacement players.
The team also pointed to the IPL’s official media advisory from April 18, 2025, which announced Brevis’ signing under the same terms.
