Donald Trump Delivers Melania Trump’s Letter to Putin on War-Affected Children

Former US President Donald Trump has personally handed over a letter from First Lady Melania Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting the plight of children caught in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

According to Reuters, administration officials initially suggested the letter mentioned the abduction of Ukrainian children, a war crime for which Putin was indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2023. However, the text of the letter, published by Fox News, makes no direct reference to the abductions.

What the Letter Said

Melania Trump’s letter struck a poetic tone, speaking of children’s “dreams of love, possibility, and safety” regardless of where they are born. She urged Putin to “restore their melodic laughter,” calling on him to act “with a stroke of the pen.”

The letter did not specifically mention the 20,000+ Ukrainian children believed to have been taken from occupied territories into Russia since the full-scale invasion in 2022.

Background on Child Abductions

Ukraine has accused Moscow of carrying out state-sponsored child trafficking, with NGOs like Save Ukraine alleging that Russian-backed administrations have even published online catalogues of abducted children. Human rights groups say such actions meet the UN’s definition of genocide.

Putin continues to face an ICC arrest warrant in over 120 countries for the deportations. Russia, however, claims it has relocated children from “dangerous war zones” for their safety.

Global Reactions

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Melania Trump for her attention to the issue during a recent call with Donald Trump. The Bring Kids Back UA initiative also thanked the First Lady, calling her concern “a true act of humanism.”

In the US, lawmakers from both parties have pressed for the return of the children before any peace deal is considered. A bipartisan congressional resolution introduced in July condemned Russia’s actions and demanded accountability.

Wider Context

The hand-delivered letter came just after Trump and Putin met at a peace summit in Alaska, where the Ukraine conflict dominated discussions. While the First Lady did not attend the summit, she has previously said she wants her role to echo Eleanor Roosevelt’s advocacy for children’s rights.
