US President Donald Trump is pushing for a three-way summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as early as August 22, according to US media reports.
The proposal comes just days after Trump met Putin at a military base in Alaska on August 15, where the two leaders held nearly three hours of talks—first privately inside the US President’s limousine, followed by a small-group meeting involving senior aides and foreign ministers. Trump later described the discussions as “very productive,” while Putin confirmed that Ukraine was the central focus.
Ukraine Talks in Motion
Zelensky has already confirmed a meeting with Trump at the White House on Monday. Trump has also invited European leaders to join that session, which could pave the way for a trilateral summit later in the week.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said a three-way meeting is likely to follow, though Moscow has not yet given a public commitment.
Proposed Peace Framework
According to reports citing European officials, Trump floated a peace deal proposal under which Ukraine would cede control of the remaining Donbass region to Russia, including areas not yet under Russian military control. In exchange, Kyiv would receive security guarantees for its remaining territory, while Europe would be assured of stability along current frontlines.
The US leader also reached out to EU heads, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, urging them to support direct negotiations.
Next Steps
Trump and Zelensky’s White House talks on Monday are seen as a key test. If successful, Trump has said he will schedule a follow-up meeting with Putin and aim to finalize a larger peace deal through a trilateral summit.
