Udine, Italy: Tottenham Hotspur came within touching distance of lifting their first UEFA Super Cup but fell to Paris Saint-Germain in a tense penalty shootout after letting a 2-0 lead slip in the dying moments.
Goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero had Spurs in control, but PSG staged a dramatic late comeback. Lee Kang-in pulled one back five minutes from time before Gonçalo Ramos equalised deep into injury time. The game went to penalties, where PSG triumphed 4-3, with Nuno Mendes netting the decisive spot-kick.
Thomas Frank’s Tactical Gamble
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank deployed a surprise 5-3-2 formation, pairing new £55 million signing Mohammed Kudus with Richarlison up front.
Speaking after the match, Frank said:
“It was like a special operation. The operation succeeded but the patient died. We had a different gameplan for PSG and were very close to succeeding.”
While praising his players’ mentality, Frank admitted the team may need to sharpen their penalty-taking skills for future finals.
PSG’s Fifth Trophy of 2025
For PSG, the win marks their fifth trophy of the year, adding to their growing dominance in European football. Tottenham, meanwhile, will take positives from their performance as they prepare to open their Premier League campaign at home against Burnley on Saturday. PSG will start their Ligue 1 season away to Nantes.
