National Guard Deployed in Washington DC as Mayor Criticises Trump’s ‘Authoritarian Push’

National Guard troops and federal law enforcement agents have been deployed across Washington DC following President Donald Trump’s decision to take control of the city’s police force, citing concerns over violent crime.

By Tuesday evening, armoured vehicles were visible in several areas of the US capital, including government buildings and tourist sites. Officials confirmed that 800 National Guard troops and 500 federal agents will be stationed in the city.

Federal Surge and Local Pushback

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, rejected Trump’s claims that crime is spiralling out of control, calling the deployment an “authoritarian push.” She urged residents to “protect our city, protect our autonomy, and protect our home rule” during a community meeting on Tuesday night.

Trump has threatened similar action in New York and Chicago, both Democrat-led cities, as part of his crackdown on crime. However, Metropolitan Police Department (MPDC) data shows violent offences in DC have fallen to their lowest level in 30 years, with a 26% drop in violent crime and a 28% drop in robbery so far in 2025 compared to last year.

Arrests and Security Measures

Since Monday night, federal agents have arrested more than 40 individuals on charges ranging from homicide and gun offences to drug dealing and stalking. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said this is “only the beginning” of a month-long effort to target violent offenders.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that bureau agents were involved in about half of the arrests, while US Attorney Jeanine Pirro warned that anyone assaulting law enforcement would face felony charges — even citing a case where a man allegedly threw a sandwich at a police officer.

Community Concerns and Crime Trends

While Mayor Bowser and MPDC Chief Pamela Smith acknowledged the importance of removing illegal firearms from the streets, they stressed the need to use federal resources effectively.

The deployment comes amid an ongoing manhunt for a suspect who fatally shot a man in Logan Circle, just a mile from the White House. The killing marked the 100th homicide in DC this year, according to local reports.

Although official data indicates crime is declining, the DC Police Union has accused city leaders of manipulating statistics, while FBI records show a more modest 9% drop in violent crime last year. Studies still place DC’s homicide rate above the average for major US cities.
