Apple iPhone 16 Leads India’s Premium Smartphone Boom – Shipments Up 21.5% in H1 2025: IDC

Apple has posted impressive growth in India’s smartphone market, with shipments rising 21.5% year-on-year to 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025, according to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. The iPhone 16 emerged as the most shipped smartphone model across the country during this period, accounting for 4% of overall India smartphone shipments.


India’s Smartphone Market – H1 2025 Highlights

  • Total Shipments: 70 million smartphones (+0.9% YoY)
  • Q2 2025 Shipments: 37 million smartphones (+7.3% YoY)
  • Chinese Brand Declines: OnePlus, Poco, Xiaomi, and Realme saw a drop in supplies.

Apple’s India Performance

  • H1 2025 Shipments: 5.9 million units (+21.5% YoY)
  • Q2 2025 Shipments: 2.7 million units (+19.7% YoY)
  • Market Share: 7.5% in Q2
  • Top Model: iPhone 16 (largest single-model shipments in India)

The premium segment (₹52,000–₹70,000) recorded a 96.4% growth YoY, with iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 accounting for more than 60% of shipments in this category.

  1. Vivo – 19% share (+23.5% YoY) – 6th consecutive quarter at No.1
  2. Samsung – 14.5% share (+21% YoY)
  3. Oppo – 13.4% share (+25.4% YoY)
  4. Motorola – 8% share (+39.4% YoY)
  5. iQoo – 4.3% share (+68.4% YoY)

Declines:

  • OnePlus: 2.5% share (-39.4% YoY)
  • Realme: 9.7% share (-17.8% YoY)
  • Xiaomi: 9.6% share (-23.5% YoY)
  • Poco: 3.8% share (-28.8% YoY)

Other Key Trends

  • Super-Premium Segment (>₹70,000): +15.8% growth – Samsung leads with 49% share, Apple close at 48%
  • Average Selling Price (ASPs): Record $275 (+10.8% YoY)
  • Entry-Level (<₹8,700): +22.9% growth to 16% market share
  • Chipset Wars: Qualcomm-powered phone shipments up 37.6% (33.9% share), MediaTek’s share falls to 44.3%

Expert Insight:
“The mid-range smartphone market is oversaturated with launches, which may lead to excess inventory during the festive season. The focus should be on fresh shipments rather than heavy discounting to clear old stock,” said Upasana Joshi, Senior Research Manager, IDC Asia Pacific.


Bottom Line: Apple’s iPhone 16 is dominating India’s high-end smartphone space, contributing heavily to premium segment growth. However, with Vivo holding the top spot overall and Samsung challenging in the super-premium category, competition in the second half of 2025 is expected to intensify.
