India Becomes Top Smartphone Supplier to US, Says Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India is now the leading supplier of smartphones to the United States, marking a major milestone in the country’s electronics manufacturing journey. Speaking at the inauguration of metro projects in Bengaluru, Vaishnaw revealed that India’s electronics production has grown sixfold in the past 11 years to reach ₹12 lakh crore, while electronics exports have surged eightfold to ₹3 lakh crore.

Rapid Growth in Mobile Manufacturing
India has emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, driven by a dramatic expansion in domestic production. Government data shows that in 2014, only 26% of phones sold in India were locally made, compared to 99.2% today. The number of mobile manufacturing units has increased from just two in 2014 to more than 300 in 2025.

The value of mobile phone production has skyrocketed from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4.22 lakh crore in FY24. Vaishnaw credited this growth to government policies aimed at making India a global hub for electronics manufacturing and expanding access to advanced technology.

Boost from Apple and Other Global Brands
Apple has confirmed that a majority of iPhones sold in the US are now manufactured in India — a sign of the country’s rising role in global supply chains. The shift is part of a broader trend of international brands increasing their production footprint in India.

Infrastructure Milestones
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three new Vande Bharat trains — Ajni (Nagpur)-Pune, KSR Bengaluru-Belgavi, and Shree Mata Vaishnodevi Katra-Amritsar — from Bengaluru. With these additions, India now operates 150 Vande Bharat trains (75 pairs).
