Udaipur Files Producer Amit Jani Alleges Death Threats Following Film’s Release

The producer of the recently released film Udaipur Files, Amit Jani, has claimed he is receiving death threats days after the movie hit theatres. The film, based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, has been at the centre of controversy since its announcement.

Jani said the threats began on Saturday, with repeated calls from an unidentified number. The caller, identifying himself as “Tabrez” from Bihar, allegedly warned of killing him either with a bomb or by shooting. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Jani urged the police and government to take immediate action, tagging the Union Home Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Uttar Pradesh Police.

The release of Udaipur Files on August 8 came after the Delhi High Court refused to stay its screening, despite petitions challenging it. The film faced delays due to censorship issues and legal disputes, with critics alleging it carried communal overtones.

Last month, the central government granted Jani Y-category security cover in both Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, following his appeal to the Supreme Court for protection. This security level provides around-the-clock protection by 8 to 11 armed personnel, including commandos.

Directed by Bharat S Shrinate and Jayant Sinha, Udaipur Files stars Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiya Lal. The movie retells the real-life killing that shocked the nation in June 2022, when two men, Mohammad Riaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad, attacked Lal in his shop. The assailants recorded the murder and shared the video online, citing religious motives, which led to widespread outrage and debates on radicalisation and communal violence in India.
