Ravichandran Ashwin Decides to Part Ways with CSK; Talks with MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad Held

Ravichandran Ashwin, the veteran India spinner, has reportedly decided to part ways with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) following a disappointing IPL 2025 season. The 38-year-old was bought by CSK in the mega auction for INR 9.75 crore, but his performance fell short of expectations, managing only seven wickets in nine matches.

According to a Cricbuzz report, Ashwin has informed CSK of his decision to leave the franchise, though the specific reasons for his departure are not yet clear. Along with his exit from the IPL team, Ashwin is also expected to give up his role as the Director of Operations at the CSK Academy, a position he has held for the past year. It is believed that his desire to avoid a potential conflict of interest situation, should he join another franchise, has played a significant role in his decision.

Ashwin’s Underwhelming IPL 2025 Season

In the 2025 IPL season, Ashwin’s performance was below expectations, especially in the powerplay overs, where he was unable to control runs and often let the opposition off the hook. His poor performance led to his being benched for several games during the season. Ashwin himself admitted that he did not have an ideal season, particularly with his powerplay bowling, which he acknowledged needed improvement.

CSK’s Management Meets

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad, along with senior CSK officials, held a meeting on Thursday in Chennai to discuss the team’s strategy for the upcoming IPL season. The meeting focused on planning for the future, including key decisions regarding player retention and new acquisitions.

Ashwin’s IPL Journey

Ashwin returned to CSK in IPL 2025 after spending nine seasons with various other franchises, including Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. His IPL journey began with CSK, where he spent the first six seasons of his career under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

CSK’s Challenging Season

This year’s IPL was a challenging one for CSK, as they finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time in the franchise’s history. With Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out midway through the season, MS Dhoni stepped in as the stand-in captain.

It remains to be seen whether Ashwin will be traded to another franchise or enter the mini auction later this year.
