Piyush Goyal: India Will Not Bow to Trade Pressures Amid Rising Tensions

Union Minister Piyush Goyal has confidently asserted that India will not succumb to external trade pressures, particularly amid the rising global trade tensions. Speaking at the Business Today India@100 Summit, Goyal addressed the ongoing issues, including the US’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods due to New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The minister emphasized that India is stronger than ever, asserting that the nation will continue to grow and overcome challenges in the international trade landscape.

India’s Economic Resilience

Goyal highlighted India’s economic growth, noting that the country is expanding at an impressive 6.5% annually and that this growth is expected to accelerate further. He firmly rejected the notion of “deglobalization,” instead suggesting that nations are restructuring their trade routes and shifting alliances. He expressed confidence that India’s exports would surpass the previous year’s numbers, with measures in place to navigate trade barriers.

Regarding India’s approach to future free trade agreements, Goyal explained that the country is no longer solely focused on duty concessions. He recalled India’s negotiations with the four-nation EFTA bloc, where India’s growing economic power, youth demographic, and the strength of its market were emphasized. He revealed that the EFTA nations had agreed to invest USD 100 billion in India, generating 10 lakh direct jobs and potentially creating 50 lakh jobs overall, set to take effect from October 1.

Condemnation of Negative Narratives

Goyal also criticized Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks about the Indian economy, calling them “degrading” and “shameful.” He expressed his belief that the nation would not forget Gandhi’s negative comments and reaffirmed India’s strong economic position, pointing to low inflation, solid foreign exchange reserves, and a robust stock market. Goyal further stressed that India contributes 16% to global growth and that the country’s young, skilled, and ambitious workforce is a major attraction for global trade partners.

A Bright Future for India’s Trade

Looking ahead, Goyal mentioned that India is actively pursuing or finalizing trade agreements with several nations, including the UAE, Mauritius, Australia, UK, EU, Chile, Peru, and New Zealand, among others. He ended his speech by reaffirming India’s global standing, attributing its economic success to leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the nation’s ability to transform adversity into opportunity.
