Mumbai: A final-year engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay died early Saturday morning in what police believe was a suicide. The student, Rohit Sinha, 26, originally from Delhi, was enrolled in the Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science program.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when Sinha allegedly jumped from the terrace of a student hostel on campus. A fellow student who was present at the time alerted authorities. Sinha was taken to Hiranandani Hospital in Powai, where he was declared dead on arrival.
The Powai Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Officers are speaking with students, staff, and hostel security personnel. A post-mortem examination is underway.
In a statement issued Saturday afternoon, IIT Bombay said it was “deeply saddened” by the incident. “The loss of a young and promising student has left the campus community in mourning. We are extending all necessary support to his family and friends during this difficult time,” the institute said.
Rohit was in the final stretch of his undergraduate studies and had been residing in the campus hostel. Those who knew him described him as quiet and academically driven. No suicide note has been recovered so far, according to officials familiar with the investigation.
The incident has again raised questions about student stress and mental health support in India’s top engineering colleges. IITs have faced similar tragedies in the past, prompting calls for improved mental wellness initiatives and more open conversations about psychological well-being among students.
Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage and electronic records to understand Sinha’s final movements. The police have not ruled out any possibilities and say all leads will be examined carefully.
As the news spread, shock and sorrow rippled across the IIT Bombay campus. Counseling services have been activated, and support is being offered to affected students. Meanwhile, the family of the deceased is expected to arrive in Mumbai shortly.
