New Delhi, Oct 26 (PTI):
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several states in North India, forecasting heavy rainfall due to a Western Disturbance. The weather system is expected to bring significant precipitation across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan over the next few days.
IMD officials stated that the Western Disturbance is likely to persist and intensify, leading to increased rainfall activity. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are particularly vulnerable to landslides and flash floods due to the heavy rainfall. Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Himachal Pradesh: The state disaster management authority has deployed teams to vulnerable areas and is monitoring the situation closely. Roadblocks have been reported in several districts due to landslides, disrupting traffic and travel. Tourists are advised to avoid non-essential travel to the state.
Uttarakhand: Similar to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand is also grappling with the threat of landslides. The Char Dham Yatra, a major pilgrimage, is being closely monitored, and authorities are considering temporary closures if the situation deteriorates.
Delhi & NCR: Delhi is likely to experience heavy rainfall, with the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas. The Delhi Traffic Police have advised commuters to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid unnecessary travel. The air quality in Delhi is also expected to deteriorate due to the rainfall.
Punjab & Haryana: These states are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, with potential disruptions to agricultural activities. Farmers are advised to take precautions to protect their crops from the rain.
Rajasthan: The state is also expected to receive rainfall, which could provide some relief from the ongoing heatwave. However, authorities are monitoring the situation for potential flooding in urban areas.
IMD Forecast: The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall at most places in the region, with isolated areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms with lightning are also likely to occur. Residents are advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall and avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary.
Impact on Travel
Several flights and train services have been delayed or cancelled due to the inclement weather. Road transport is also facing disruptions due to landslides and road closures. Travelers are advised to check with their respective airlines and railway authorities for the latest updates.
The IMD will continue to monitor the Western Disturbance and provide regular updates on the rainfall situation. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow the instructions of local authorities.
