Tamil Nadu: Police Van Attacked, EPS Accuses DMK of Lawlessness

Chennai, Tamil Nadu – A police van was reportedly attacked with petrol bombs in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu district late on Sunday night, sparking a political firestorm. Former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) has strongly condemned the incident, accusing the ruling DMK government of allowing law and order to deteriorate to a “laughing stock.”

According to police sources, the attack occurred near the Madurantakam bus stand. While no police personnel were seriously injured, the van sustained damage. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, and initial investigations suggest the involvement of individuals linked to a local dispute. However, EPS has framed the incident as a symptom of a broader breakdown in law enforcement under the DMK administration.

EPS, in a strongly worded statement released on Monday, asserted that the attack demonstrated a complete lack of control by the state government. He claimed that such incidents were becoming increasingly common, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among the public. He further alleged that the DMK government was prioritizing political considerations over the safety and security of citizens.

“The brazen attack on a police van is a clear indication of the deteriorating law and order situation in Tamil Nadu,” EPS stated. “The DMK government has failed to maintain peace and tranquility in the state. Criminals are emboldened, and the police are unable to function effectively.” He called for a thorough investigation into the incident and demanded strict action against those responsible.

Political Fallout

The incident has quickly escalated into a political battle, with the AIADMK using it to attack the DMK’s governance record. DMK spokespersons have dismissed EPS’s accusations as politically motivated, arguing that the AIADMK is attempting to create unrest and destabilize the state. They maintain that the government is committed to upholding law and order and that the police are taking all necessary steps to address the situation.

However, the opposition parties, including the BJP, have echoed EPS’s concerns, adding to the pressure on the DMK government. They have demanded a detailed explanation from the government regarding the incident and called for measures to prevent similar attacks in the future. The Tamil Nadu police have increased security measures across the state, particularly in sensitive areas, in an attempt to reassure the public.

The incident comes at a time when the DMK government is facing criticism on several fronts, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement. The attack on the police van is likely to further fuel these criticisms and intensify the political rivalry between the DMK and the AIADMK. The state government is expected to provide a detailed report on the incident to Governor R.N. Ravi in the coming days. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the police continue their probe.

The focus now remains on identifying and apprehending the individuals responsible for the attack and restoring public confidence in the state’s law enforcement capabilities. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the Tamil Nadu government in maintaining peace and security in a politically charged environment.
