Mumbai – Corporators belonging to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena concluded their stay at a Mumbai hotel on Wednesday, following a concerted effort by the party to prevent potential horse-trading ahead of upcoming local body elections. The move to sequester the corporators was initiated as a precautionary measure amidst fears of attempts by rival factions to destabilize the Shinde-led coalition.
The stay, which lasted several days, involved approximately 60 corporators. Party officials stated the decision was prompted by intelligence reports suggesting that opposition groups were actively trying to lure members with offers of money and positions. The aim was to ensure the unity and integrity of the Shinde Sena ahead of crucial polls for municipal corporations, zilla parishads, and panchayat samitis.
Preventing Disaffection
Senior party leaders emphasized that the hotel stay was not a sign of distrust among the corporators, but rather a proactive step to shield them from external pressures. “We wanted to create an environment where our corporators could discuss strategies and remain focused on their work without any distractions,” explained a senior Shinde Sena MLA, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The political climate is volatile, and we couldn’t afford any chances of disaffection within our ranks.”
The opposition, particularly the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), criticized the move as undemocratic and a clear indication of the Shinde faction’s insecurity. Thackeray’s party alleged that the corporators were being held against their will and were being pressured to remain loyal. These accusations were vehemently denied by the Shinde Sena, which maintained that the stay was entirely voluntary.
During their stay, the corporators participated in a series of meetings with party strategists and senior leaders. These sessions focused on election preparedness, identifying potential candidates, and formulating campaign strategies for the upcoming local body elections. The Shinde Sena is keen to consolidate its position in these elections, demonstrating its strength and popular support across the state.
The conclusion of the hotel stay signals a return to normal political activity for the Shinde Sena corporators. They are now expected to resume their work in their respective constituencies, engaging with voters and preparing for the electoral battle. However, the party has indicated that it will remain vigilant and continue to monitor the political situation closely, ready to take further steps if necessary to safeguard its interests.
Political analysts suggest that the upcoming local body elections are crucial for both the Shinde Sena and the UBT. A strong performance by either side could significantly influence the political landscape of Maharashtra and potentially set the stage for future assembly elections. The Shinde Sena’s attempt to prevent horse-trading underscores the high stakes involved and the intense competition expected in the polls. The party is hoping to leverage its control of the state government to gain an advantage in the local elections.
