The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently questioning film producer R.B. Vijay over his alleged role in the tragic stampede that occurred in Karur, Tamil Nadu, during a distribution event for his film, Kenny, on January 14th. The incident resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left several others injured. The CBI took over the investigation following a Madras High Court order.
According to sources, Vijay was summoned to the CBI’s Chennai office on Wednesday and is being questioned regarding the planning and execution of the event, specifically focusing on crowd control measures. Investigators are reportedly scrutinizing the arrangements made for the distribution of the film’s rights and the alleged lack of adequate safety precautions. The core of the questioning revolves around why Vijay departed the venue shortly before the stampede occurred, prompting the CBI to ask, “Why did you leave the venue?”
The initial investigation by local police revealed that a large crowd had gathered at the venue, hoping to receive cash assistance from Vijay. The situation escalated when the distribution of funds began, leading to a chaotic rush. Authorities believe that inadequate crowd management and a lack of proper barricades contributed to the tragedy. The Madras High Court intervened, directing the CBI to take over the case, citing concerns about a fair and impartial investigation.
Court Intervention and Previous Findings
The court’s decision to transfer the case to the CBI came after petitions raised doubts about the objectivity of the local police investigation. Petitioners alleged potential influence and a lack of thoroughness in the initial probe. The court also directed the state government to provide full cooperation to the CBI in its investigation.
Prior to the CBI’s involvement, the Karur police had registered a case against Vijay and several others, including event organizers, on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. However, the investigation faced criticism for its slow pace and perceived lack of progress. The CBI is now expected to re-examine all aspects of the case, including the role of event management companies and the permissions granted for the event.
The CBI is also examining eyewitness accounts and collecting forensic evidence to establish a clear timeline of events leading up to the stampede. They are focusing on determining whether the organizers had anticipated the large turnout and if sufficient measures were in place to handle the crowd. The questioning of Vijay is considered a crucial step in the investigation, as he is believed to possess vital information about the event’s planning and execution. The agency aims to ascertain whether negligence or deliberate actions contributed to the tragic incident. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the CBI continues its probe.
