New Delhi, October 26 – India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar embarked on a six-day official visit to France and Luxembourg on Thursday, signaling a continued focus on strengthening bilateral ties with key European partners. The visit underscores India’s commitment to broadening its strategic partnerships in the post-pandemic world and navigating the evolving geopolitical landscape.
The first leg of the tour brings Jaishankar to France, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with his French counterpart, Catherine Colonna. These discussions are expected to cover a wide range of issues, including defence cooperation, trade and investment, climate change, and counter-terrorism efforts. France is a crucial partner for India in several domains, particularly in the defence sector, with ongoing collaborations on platforms like the Rafale fighter jet.
India and France share a ‘Strategic Partnership’ and a strong tradition of cooperation, aiming to enhance their collaboration on issues of mutual concern. The talks will likely delve into the progress of various joint projects as well as exploring new avenues of cooperation. The economic relationship between the two countries is also expected to be a key focus, with efforts to boost trade and encourage French investments in India’s growing economy.
Following his engagements in France, Jaishankar will proceed to Luxembourg. This will be the first-ever visit by an Indian External Affairs Minister to the Grand Duchy, highlighting the importance India places on forging closer ties with Luxembourg. The agenda in Luxembourg features a meeting with the country’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn.
Focus on Bilateral Trade and Investment
Discussions in Luxembourg are expected to center on increasing bilateral trade and investment, with a particular emphasis on attracting Luxembourgish financial technology (FinTech) investments into India. Luxembourg is a significant financial hub, and collaboration in the FinTech sector could provide a boost to India’s digital economy. The topics of European Union (EU) matters and regional geopolitical developments will also likely be addressed.
During his visit to Luxembourg, Jaishankar is also expected to meet with other high-level dignitaries and engage with the Indian diaspora residing in the country. These interactions often provide valuable insights into the experiences and perspectives of the Indian community abroad. The Minister is also expected to address a business forum to explore potential trade opportunities.
The visit comes at a time when India is actively engaging with European nations to deepen cooperation in various fields and to bolster its overall strategic presence in the region. The European Union is a major trading partner for India, and strengthening these relationships is considered vital for India’s economic growth and development. This trip highlights India’s proactive diplomatic approach towards achieving its foreign policy objectives and fostering a multipolar world order.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visits are expected to further enhance the momentum in India’s relations with both France and Luxembourg, paving the way for greater cooperation and understanding in the years to come. Jaishankar’s engagements will be monitored closely by both Indian and international observers, as they offer an insight into the shifting dynamics of global diplomacy.
