New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has indicated India is making concerted efforts to host the 2036 Olympic Games, expressing his ambition for the nation to welcome the world’s biggest sporting spectacle. The announcement, made during a speech in Odisha, signals a renewed push for India to firmly establish itself on the global sporting map and capitalize on its growing economic and political influence.
While Modi didn’t offer a definitive timeline or detail specific plans, his remarks are widely interpreted as a strong endorsement of a potential Olympic bid. India has previously hosted the 1951 Asian Games, the 1982 Asian Games, the 1996 Cricket World Cup (jointly with Pakistan and Sri Lanka), and the 2010 Commonwealth Games, but an Olympic Games has remained elusive. Previous attempts to bid, particularly for the 2004 and 2012 games, lacked robust infrastructure and sufficient government backing.
Infrastructure Development Key
A crucial element of a successful bid will be substantial infrastructure development. India will need to demonstrate its capacity to construct world-class stadiums, accommodation facilities, transportation networks, and media centers.
