Abhishek Banerjee Criticizes Election Commission After Bengal Meeting

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has strongly criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) following a meeting held in Kolkata. Banerjee alleged that the ECI provided “no concrete answer to anything” during the discussions, particularly regarding concerns raised about the deployment of central forces and the functioning of Special Police Observers (SPOs), referred to as SIR (Special Inspector General of Police Rank) in Bengal.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Banerjee accused the SIR officers of acting in a biased manner, claiming they were actively working to benefit opposition parties. He questioned their impartiality, alleging instances of selective implementation of rules and a lack of transparency in their operations. Banerjee stated that specific complaints and evidence of irregularities were presented to the ECI, but no satisfactory resolutions or assurances were received.

“We had a detailed discussion with the full bench of the Election Commission. Unfortunately, we didn’t receive any concrete answers to our questions. We raised crucial points regarding the blatant misuse of Central Armed Forces and the biased approach of the SIR officials. Yet, the responses were vague and non-committal,” Banerjee reportedly said. He further emphasized the TMC’s commitment to free and fair elections but expressed dissatisfaction with the ECI’s handling of the situation in West Bengal.

The TMC has repeatedly accused the ECI of being influenced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the primary opposition in the state. Banerjee’s latest outburst is seen as a continuation of this narrative, with the party alleging a deliberate attempt to create an uneven playing field in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He specifically targeted the SPOs, alleging they were exceeding their jurisdiction and acting more like political agents than neutral observers.

Central Force Concerns and Alleged Bias

A major point of contention during the meeting was the alleged misuse of central forces by opposition parties to intimidate TMC workers and disrupt their campaign activities. Banerjee claimed that the ECI had failed to address these concerns effectively. He also brought up instances of alleged discrepancies in the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines, demanding thorough verification and a robust mechanism for addressing voter grievances.

Sources within the TMC indicate that the party is preparing to escalate the matter further, potentially seeking legal intervention if their concerns are not adequately addressed. The ECI has not yet released an official statement responding to Banerjee’s accusations. Political analysts suggest this development could lead to increased tension between the ruling TMC and the ECI in the run-up to the elections.

Banerjee’s statements come at a crucial time as West Bengal is poised to be a key battleground in the Lok Sabha polls. The TMC aims to retain its significant Lok Sabha seats whereas the BJP is hopeful of making inroads in the state. The credibility of the electoral process, therefore, remains under intense scrutiny. The party has asserted its commitment to cooperate with the ECI, but only if the commission demonstrates a commitment to fairness and neutrality.

The ECI is expected to announce its decision on the TMC’s concerns in the coming days, which will likely shape the narrative of the election campaign in the state. The TMC’s strong opposition raises questions about the smoothness of the electoral process and the potential for further conflicts between the party and the election authority.
