West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticised the recent terror attacks in Delhi and Kashmir, raising serious questions about the security situation and directly calling for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Addressing a public rally in West Bengal, Banerjee asserted that the attacks indicated a complete failure of law and order and the national security apparatus under Shah’s leadership.
“The incidents in Delhi and Kashmir are extremely concerning. How can such attacks happen repeatedly? This shows a significant lapse in security,” she stated, adding that the people of the country deserve an explanation. She questioned the efficacy of security measures in place and pointedly asked what steps were being taken to prevent future occurrences.
Banerjee’s demand for Shah’s resignation is rooted in her claim that the Home Ministry has failed to protect the citizens of India. She has consistently been a vocal critic of the central government’s policies, particularly those related to security and internal affairs. The attacks provided her with a platform to reiterate her concerns and escalate her opposition.
Allegations of Security Lapses
The Chief Minister didn’t hold back in her assessment of the situation. She alleged that intelligence inputs were ignored or not acted upon promptly, leading to the attacks. While she did not provide specific details regarding these alleged lapses, she insisted that a thorough investigation was necessary to uncover the truth and fix accountability.
“We need answers. We need to know why intelligence warnings were not heeded. The Home Minister must take responsibility for this,” Banerjee emphasised. Her comments came amidst heightened security alerts across the country, particularly in major cities and sensitive areas.
The recent attacks in Delhi involved a low-intensity explosion near the Israel Embassy, and in Kashmir, several security personnel were injured in encounters with militants. These incidents have triggered a political storm, with opposition parties joining the chorus of criticism against the government’s handling of the security challenges.
In response to Banerjee’s accusations, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended Amit Shah and accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) – the party led by Banerjee – of playing “politicization of terror.” Party officials stated that the central government was taking all necessary steps to strengthen security and counter terrorism and that such attacks were unfortunate but did not reflect a systemic failure.
“The Home Minister is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of the nation. These accusations are baseless and aimed at creating unrest and scoring political points,” said a senior BJP leader. The party also highlighted the various counter-terrorism measures initiated by the government in recent years.
Banerjee’s strong stance is also seen as a strategic move to consolidate her position as a key opposition leader ahead of the upcoming state elections. Her sharp criticism of Shah and the central government resonates with sections of the electorate concerned about security and governance. The political fallout from these attacks and Banerjee’s response is likely to continue to unfold in the coming days.
