Filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan’s acclaimed drama Homebound has been shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards, marking a major step toward a potential Oscar nomination.

The film, starring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, is now among 15 shortlisted titles selected from 86 countries and regions. From this list, only five films will ultimately secure official nominations.

Shortlist confirmed by the Academy

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the shortlist on its official website, noting strong participation from Academy members during the preliminary voting round. Homebound was earlier chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2026.

Production banner Dharma Productions shared the news on social media, thanking audiences and collaborators worldwide for their support as the film continues its international journey.

Producer Karan Johar called the milestone deeply emotional, describing the journey from its festival premiere to the Oscar shortlist as overwhelming and rewarding. He credited director Neeraj Ghaywan and the entire team for bringing the film to life.

Actor Vishal Jethwa said the recognition felt surreal, calling the shortlist a moment he had only imagined. He praised Ghaywan’s direction for pushing him to explore new emotional depths and thanked Johar for backing the project. Jethwa also acknowledged co-star Ishaan Khatter for elevating every scene.

Films competing alongside Homebound

The shortlisted films include titles from Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Norway, Palestine, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Tunisia, placing Homebound in strong global company.

About the film

Homebound follows childhood friends Shoaib and Chandan, who dream of joining the police force. Set against the pressures faced by young Indians, the film explores friendship, ambition, and social realities. The cast also includes Janhvi Kapoor.

Final Oscar nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 15, 2026, with Conan O’Brien set to host.
