At least four people died and 25 others were injured after a multi-vehicle collision on the Delhi-Agra corridor of the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura early Tuesday, with dense fog blamed for dangerously low visibility.
Police said the crash involved seven buses and three cars, triggering a chain-reaction pile-up. Some vehicles reportedly caught fire after the collision, causing panic among passengers and adding to the chaos on the highway.
Mathura SSP Shlok Kumar said emergency teams were rushed to the spot soon after the incident was reported. Fire service units, police personnel, and local administration officials joined the rescue effort. He confirmed that the search and rescue operation was nearing completion and that authorities were working to clear the blocked stretch of the expressway.
According to officials, the four fatalities were confirmed at the scene, while around 25 injured passengers were taken to hospital for treatment. Police said the injured were not in critical condition and were receiving medical care.
District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh described the incident as unfortunate and said the immediate focus was on relief and medical support. He stated that multiple emergency resources were deployed, including fire tenders and ambulances, to move the injured quickly and manage the situation on the ground. The injured were sent to CHC Baldev and the District Hospital, officials said.
Authorities also arranged transport for stranded passengers, with government vehicles being used to help people reach their destinations once the situation stabilised.
The Mathura pile-up comes a day after another fog-related crash on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, where a multi-vehicle collision involving around 20 vehicles was reported early Monday morning. That incident also left four people dead, including two police personnel, with several others injured.
