Bangladesh’s interim government has launched a sweeping security clampdown following a fresh wave of unrest that has engulfed the nation. The measures, announced late Tuesday, aim to restore order amid escalating tensions between security forces and opposition supporters.
The crackdown comes after days of violent protests that left at least 12 people dead and dozens injured across major cities, including the capital Dhaka. Security forces have been granted expanded powers to detain suspected agitators without immediate judicial review, drawing criticism from human rights groups.
A nationwide curfew has been imposed in affected regions, with military patrols deployed to maintain control. Internet services remain restricted in several districts to prevent coordination of further demonstrations. The interim administration, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s allies, attributes the turmoil to opposition attempts to sabotage upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for January.
Opposition parties, notably the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), deny any involvement in the violence and accuse the government of using excessive force to suppress dissent. BNP leaders have called for dialogue, urging international mediation to resolve the political crisis peacefully.
The unrest reflects deeper divisions within Bangladeshi society, with allegations of voter intimidation and electoral fraud fueling public anger. Analysts suggest the current measures may exacerbate tensions rather than alleviate them, warning of potential long-term destabilization.
International observers have expressed concern, with the United Nations urging restraint and calling for inclusive dialogue. The European Union and United States have meanwhile threatened sanctions against individuals responsible for human rights abuses.
As the situation remains fluid, observers warn that without genuine political compromise, Bangladesh risks entering a cycle of recurring violence that could hinder its economic progress and regional stability.
