Seventeen years after the horrific 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, a survivor has recounted the harrowing experience of being shot by Ajmal Kasab, one of the terrorists involved in the carnage. The survivor’s testimony serves as a stark reminder of the brutality and inhumanity of the attacks that shook India’s financial capital in 2008.
The Night of Terror
On the fateful night of November 26, 2008, Mumbai came under siege as a group of heavily armed terrorists launched coordinated attacks across the city. Among the targets was the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), a bustling railway station where thousands of commuters were present. Ajmal Kasab and his accomplice, Ismail Khan, unleashed a barrage of gunfire and explosions, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. The survivor, who was present at the station, found himself caught in the crossfire.
“I saw him. He was young, maybe my age, but his eyes…they were filled with hate,” the survivor recalled, describing the moment he came face-to-face with Kasab. “He just started shooting. People were falling all around me. I tried to run, but I was hit.” The bullet, he said, pierced through his arm, leaving him bleeding and in excruciating pain. Despite his injury, he managed to escape the station and seek medical help. He was one of the fortunate few who survived the attack on CSMT, which claimed the lives of over 50 people.
A Lasting Impact
The 26/11 Mumbai attacks lasted for three days, claiming the lives of 166 people and injuring hundreds more. The attacks exposed the vulnerability of India’s security apparatus and led to a major overhaul of the country’s counter-terrorism strategies. Ajmal Kasab was the only terrorist captured alive. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. In 2012, he was hanged in a Pune jail. The survivor of the attack said that while Kasab’s execution brought a sense of closure, the memories of that night continue to haunt him.
“I still have nightmares,” he confessed. “The sound of gunfire, the screams of people…it’s all etched in my mind.” Despite the trauma, the survivor has found the strength to move forward. He has dedicated his life to helping other victims of terror and promoting peace and understanding. His story is one of resilience, hope, and the indomitable spirit of humanity in the face of adversity. The 26/11 attacks remain a scar on India’s collective memory, a reminder of the ever-present threat of terrorism. The stories of survivors like him serve as a source of inspiration and a call to action to build a more secure and peaceful world.
