Pakistan’s former ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani, has taken a sharp dig at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the latter once again praised US President Donald Trump for his “instrumental role” in global peace efforts.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Sharif commended Trump for his part in “advancing peace through the Kuala Lumpur Accord, the Gaza Peace Plan, and his resolute efforts for peace and stability in the Middle East and South Asia.” Sharif, who had nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this year, said the US President had “saved millions of lives across the globe.”
Reacting to the post, Haqqani mocked Sharif, saying the Pakistan PM remained “in the lead for gold in what Fareed Zakaria surmised might be the Olympic sport of flattering Trump.”
“Pakistan’s PM still in the lead for Gold in what @FareedZakaria surmised might be the Olympic Sport of flattering Trump,” Haqqani wrote on X, sharing the original post.
Soon after, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reshared Haqqani’s post, adding his own endorsement of the diplomatic quip.
Backlash Over Repeated Praise
This is not the first time Shehbaz Sharif has drawn criticism for his admiration of Trump. Earlier this month, during the Gaza Summit in Egypt, Sharif lauded the former US President for his “untiring and relentless efforts” to bring peace to the Middle East.
At the summit, Sharif claimed Trump played a crucial role in achieving a ceasefire between India and Pakistan and deserved recognition for “saving millions of lives.” Standing beside Trump, he even reiterated his desire to nominate him again for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The remarks sparked widespread backlash on social media, with many Pakistanis accusing Sharif of “embarrassing the nation” and engaging in unnecessary flattery.
