3 Arrested in Gang Rape of Medical Student in Durgapur, West Bengal

Durgapur, West Bengal | October 12, 2025 — Police have arrested three men in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 23-year-old MBBS student from Odisha near a private medical college in Durgapur. Officials confirmed that all three accused are local residents, though their identities have not yet been made public.

According to police sources, the incident took place late Friday night near the IQ City Medical College in the city’s Shivapur area. The survivor, a second-year student from Jaleswar in Odisha, had gone out with a male friend when a group of men confronted them near the college gate. The woman was reportedly taken to a secluded spot about a kilometre away and sexually assaulted before the attackers fled.

The survivor’s family has alleged that her companion may also have been involved, claiming he misled her and took her to an isolated location “under false pretences.” In her complaint, the student stated that the assailants also took her phone and stole ₹5,000.

She is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital and is said to be in stable condition. Authorities have assured that she will receive psychological counselling.

Police Investigation and Official Response

Police have recorded the survivor’s statement and are questioning several people, including her male friend. A senior officer said the investigation is progressing swiftly, with more arrests possible.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the West Bengal Police condemned the assault and vowed strict action against those involved.

“We are deeply saddened by the sexual assault on a medical student from Odisha in Durgapur. The culprits shall not go unpunished,” the statement read.
“We urge everyone to refrain from spreading unverified information. West Bengal Police remains committed to a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women.”

Reactions from Officials and Political Leaders

Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women, visited the survivor at the hospital and said that the woman’s friend remains “under the scanner.”

Political reactions have followed swiftly. BJP leader Amit Malviya accused the Trinamool Congress government of failing to ensure women’s safety, calling for a transparent investigation and harsh punishment for the accused.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also condemned the incident, describing it as “highly painful.” He said he has directed state officials to coordinate with their counterparts in West Bengal and offer full support to the survivor’s family.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Minister and TMC leader Babul Supriyo called the incident “shameful and tragic,” and said the culprits must face “the harshest possible punishment” through a fast-track trial.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to interrogate suspects and collect evidence in the case.
