At least 10 people, including two minors, were killed and 41 others injured when a truck collided with a tractor-trolley carrying pilgrims in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district early Monday, police said.
Accident Details
The incident occurred around 2:10 am near the Arnia bypass on the Bulandshahr-Aligarh border, when a canter truck hit the tractor-trolley from behind, causing it to overturn, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar Singh.
The tractor-trolley was carrying 61 pilgrims from Rafatpur village in Kasganj district, who were on their way to Jaharpeer in Rajasthan.
Police said eight people died on the spot, while two others — identified as Lekhraj (40) and Umashankar (60) — later succumbed to injuries in hospitals, raising the death toll to 10. Among the victims were two children, aged 6 and 12.
Injuries and Treatment
Of the injured, 12 are minors. Three remain critical and are on ventilator support. Victims were admitted to multiple hospitals — including Aligarh Medical College, Bulandshahr District Hospital, and Kailash Hospital in Khurja. By afternoon, 18 injured were discharged after treatment.
Government Response
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences and announced ₹2 lakh ex gratia for the families of those killed and ₹50,000 for the injured. He directed officials to ensure immediate and proper treatment for the victims.
District Magistrate Shruti and other senior officials visited the site and later met patients at hospitals.
Legal Action
Police said the truck, registered in Haryana, has been impounded, and legal proceedings are underway. The tractor-trolley had reportedly been modified into two levels to carry extra passengers.
Officials noted that using tractor-trolleys for passenger transport is prohibited in Uttar Pradesh. In a similar incident in February 2024, 23 pilgrims died when a tractor-trolley overturned in Kasganj district.
